Once upon a sponge…or rather many, SpongeWho SquareKnit was designed; a stool with dual usage; a stool and a side table.  SpongeWho SquareKnit uses the iconic yellow sponge by Scotch-Brite and integrates it into the design of an everyday object in the form of weaving.  This overused sponge takes a new form and becomes a pillow/soft absorbent surface for SpongeWho SquareKnit. Additionally, the plywood stool base is all wrapped up in Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scour Pad making it ideal for ‘heavy-duty lifting’ despite its spongy appearance! SpongeWho SquareKnit is inspired by the appearance of traditional weaving, where the iconic sponge is used as the ‘thread.’  Furthermore, the playful furniture piece offers timeless and functional design.

Sponge Who SquareKnit is a prototype stool / side table not only for your kitchen, or your pop/modern living room, but ideal as kids furniture piece as they seem to love the softness of the sponge on an everyday furniture object.  SpongeWho SquareKnit was presented by Marcia Argyriades who is a very proud member of the papairlines team at the Once Upon A Sponge exhibition, which opened on Thursday the 10th of May and will last until the 16th of June 2012, at TAF (5 Normanou Str., Monastiraki, Athens * GREECE).

Label Design for Healthy Homemade Oat Cookies

Label design for homemade organic oatmeal cookies with honey and sesame paste.  The client asked for a simple and honest design which is as pure and honest as the organic materials used in the making of her healthy homemade oat cookies.  The client requested for a design which is reminiscent of old Greek food labels with a modern twist; the result follows:

Once Upon a Sponge Exhibition

papairlines proudly present the exhibition Once Upon A Sponge, which opens on Thursday the 10th of May @8:00p.m. and will last until the 16th of June 2012, at TAF (5 Normanou Str., Monastiraki, Athens * GREECE)

The exhibition Once Upon A Sponge aims to showcase the different perspectives of design. Design is not just encountered in windows of high-end shops, but also something we experience and interact with on a daily basis: from a sign and a widely recognizable piece of furniture to a love note and a D.I.Y. object that adapts random and accessible materials. Design is about identifying, analyzing and solving problems in our everyday life as well as commenting on social phenomena and behaviors.

For the exhibition Once Upon A Sponge, 20 designers conceptualize and construct unexpected and imaginative narrative objects with the final destination being to show and tell stories through the use of the iconic yellow sponge. The sponge, a neglected everyday object, transforms into a construction material for the passengers – designers of papairlines who are invited to redefine the form and the established use of the sponge in order to challenge the perception of the public. The objects emerging from this process will be landing in TAF.

At the same time a collection of photographs showcases a series of spontaneous, D.I.Y objects, created by non-design professionals who, lacking resources, creatively subvert existing objects to solve problems and overcome design weaknesses.
